Faith of Friends

Andrew wrote in: “I’ve been stuck on Matthew 9:2 for a while:

And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.”

Mark and Luke use similar language. My reading of this verse is that Jesus forgives the paralytic’s sin based on the paralytic’s friends’ faith. Is my reading correct? If so, how does that work—how is one forgiven of his sins based on the faith of others?”
