Everything is Empty - Ecclesiastes 1:1-18
September 8, 2013
"Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity."
So begins the Bible’s book of Ecclesiastes. Everything is empty, a vapor that is here one moment and gone the next. This may be the most depressive and despairing book in the entire Bible. Ecclesiastes spells out the emptiness of the vapor that is this life with poetic verse and artistic detail that capture the difficulty of the grind we each face through this life. Whether wisdom or work, riches or pleasure – whatever we turn to for satisfaction, upon further inspection, comes up empty.
This Sunday we begin our journey through Ecclesiastes. This fall we will see, ultimately, that while this life feels like a vapor, there is hope.
